Video: Does bias in artificial intelligence exist?

A black person is less likely than a white person to pay off their loan on time. A person called John will make a better programmer than Mary. These aren’t our opinions at all, but in fact, are decisions made by Artificial Intelligence in the recent past.

Harvey Bennett from Searchie and Pavel Nesterov from Reaktor discuss the existence of bias in artificial intelligence and debate on how it impacts businesses covering the following cases:

  • 12% of leading machine learning researchers are women
  • In May 2016 the US news organisation ProPublica reported that COMPAS is racially biased.
  • Financial algorithms for predicting loan repayment are regularly accused of being racist.
  • Google’s online advertising system showed high-income jobs to men much more often than to women.

Despite this, AI could contribute $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030.
