The 3,300m2 pavilion will be three floors high and has been designed “to reflect the dynamic lines of aircraft wings ready to take flight”.
The pavilion will be covered by 26 slanted architectural fins that will comprise 800m of LED lighting that will be used to create multi-sensory effects and movements, and used for light shows that will be held on every night of Expo 2020 Dubai, which runs from 20 October, 2020 to 10 April, 2021.
Integrated solar arrays, off-site construction, responsive solar shading, and “a verdant landscape on both the inside and outside of the Emirates Pavilion” are included in construction plans.
Located close to Expo 2020 Dubai’s UAE Pavilion and within walking distance of Al Wasl Plaza – the centre of Expo 2020 Dubai’s site – the Emirates Pavilion will be able to welcome more than 56,000 visitors per month.
Designed to showcase “the changing world of commercial aviation” and to spur a discussion around “the power of mobility and its advancements both in the air and on the ground”, the Emirates Pavilion will focus on themes such as the science of flight; advancements in engine technologies; new aerospace materials that can boost efficiencies and cut fuel consumption; fuselage interiors that improve passenger comfort; and improving passenger experience at airports.
Natural daylight will be a critical element of the pavilion, which features an enclosed floor plan with the aim of reducing energy consumption.
The first theme of Emirates Pavilion will allow visitors to learn about the basic principles of aviation. The second one, focused on engine advances, will explore how electric units might shape the future of aviation and help cut emissions over the years.
Emirates Pavilion’s future lab will explore “innovative metallic and composite materials that are being developed, improved and adopted to offer better flying performance”, the airline said. Research will focus on material features such as reduced weight, increased strength, greater corrosion-resistance, and improved fuel economy, to explore how these materials might “become the building blocks for the aircraft of tomorrow”.
