Video: New rules for social influencers – part one

The National Media Council has issued new rules for influencers, which come into effect this June. What exactly will they change and to whom do they apply?

In this edition of Inside AB, Jeremy Lawrence and Eddie Taylor take a closer look at the new regulations. They discuss the legal opinion shared by Fiona Robertson, a senior associate at Al Tamimi & Co, at the recent ITP Live Media Summit.

Topics for discussion include details of the licence, which any social media influencer who receives payment for promoting goods or services, must now hold; as well as the requirement to abide by the country’s media laws.

The conclusion is clear: being a social influencer is no longer a hobby. It is a job, with all the legal and financial obligations that come with it.
