In today’s world, sustainability and digital transformation are integral drivers of global change, reshaping industries, economies, and societies. Given the urgent pace of climate change, organisations have a social responsibility to re-align technological advancement with environmental responsibility to efficiently address this challenge.

Leading global technology group, e& views this challenge as a significant opportunity for growth. The group is committed to powering the digital ecosystem with the latest innovations and technologies, all while upholding a resolute dedication to sustainability.

Obaid Bokisha, Group Chief Operating Officer of e& , is actively spearheading the group’s efforts toward building a more sustainable and secure digital future. By taking proactive steps in its operations, e& is integrating sustainability into all aspects of its business while also introducing environmentally friendly innovations.

Bokisha highlights that more than digital innovation is required. “Organisations must deliver solutions that improve lives while ensuring the planet is protected for future generations,” he says.  e&’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its latest initiatives. They reflect our commitment and dedication to delivering advanced technologies supported by a sustainable strategy focused on the future. They also demonstrate our operational excellence and highlight our vision for a better world.”

“We don’t adopt environmental practices just to follow market trends; instead, we lead innovation to directly address the climate crisis. Our commitment to achieving carbon neutrality across our UAE operations by 2030 and across the entire group by 2040 reflects our ambitious long-term vision for sustainability. However, promises alone won’t change the world – real change demands bold and decisive action.”

e& has taken action on several initiatives to cement its position as a sustainable leader. The group unveiled eco-friendly, recycled SIM cards for its UAE customers at the COP28 summit held in Dubai last year. Additionally, e& has deployed energy-efficient wireless equipment at its mobile network sites, significantly reducing energy consumption compared to traditional equipment and further lowering CO2 emissions.

“We’ve made significant strides in enhancing sustainability across our supply chain, including signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NEC Laboratories America and the Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI). Moreover, a dedicated system/framework has been developed for negotiations, policies, and simulations to support e&’s transformation into a global technology group. These efforts align with our overarching goal of achieving carbon neutrality and advancing toward a more sustainable digital future,” explains Bokisha.

Bokisha further emphasised the group’s partnership with Al-Futtaim Electric Mobility to deploy a fleet of 100 BYD electric vehicles for its operations across the UAE, contributing to the nation’s efforts in promoting sustainable transportation. “This initiative reflects our commitment to adopting eco-friendly transport solutions to reduce carbon emissions. It also aligns with our plan to gradually replace all light-duty vehicles in the UAE with electric vehicles. These electric vehicles are part of a broader strategy to support the UAE’s green mobility goals and other environmental initiatives .”

Green technology for a sustainable future

As part of its business development sustainability efforts, e& UAE announced a series of green communications network initiatives covering its networks and data centers. The company launched its first carbon-neutral 5G site at Dubai Expo City, powered entirely by renewable energy and utilizing Massive MIMO technology. This site represents the convergence of cutting-edge wireless technology and sustainability, improving capacity, coverage, and the overall customer experience.

“As we continue to expand our green sites, we’re improving network capacity and coverage while embedding sustainability into the telecommunications sector. For e&, these actions represent a pivotal shift from a consumption mindset to one focused on resource preservation- an essential change for a better future.”

A collective responsibility

Bokisha calls for unified efforts. According to him, sustainability isn’t just a corporate responsibility; it’s a societal need. “Climate change is a global challenge that demands collective solutions. With every step we take as an organisation- from deploying energy-saving networks to embracing green mobility- we move one step closer to a future where technology and sustainability  are conjoined.”

e& through its sustainable strategy reinforces the need for companies to choose a path that shapes the world for future generations. Bokisha concludes, “For us, the future is clear: we strive for a world where technology leads both business and sustainability. Our journey towards a sustainable future continues, and with bold actions, creative thinking, and a commitment to environmental responsibility, we can accelerate progress on this path. At e&, we are proud to be at the forefront of this transformation, demonstrating that sustainability and technology are synonymous with building a better world.”
