The US is in constant contact through military, diplomatic and intelligence channels with Saudi Arabia, the State Department has said in response to American media reports about Iranian plans to carry out imminent attack on energy infrastructure in the Middle East.
US State Department Ned Price told a press briefing on Tuesday that the US would defend its interests and its partners in the region.
“We won’t hesitate to act in defence of our interests and our partners in the region,” Price said.
He said the US isn’t aware of any public warnings issued through the embassy in Saudi Arabia about a security threat against US citizens.
The State Department is required to inform citizens “if we do have information that is precise, that is credible, that could potentially pose a threat to the American citizen community.”
The Wall Street Journal first reported news of imminent Iranian threats.
Citing Saudi and US officials, the WSJ reported that Saudi Arabia, the US and other countries in the Middle East had stepped up the level of alert for their military forces.
A White House spokesperson said on Tuesday the US is concerned about threats from Iran against Saudi Arabia and will not hesitate to respond if necessary.
“We are concerned about the threat picture, and we remain in constant contact through military and intelligence channels with the Saudis,” Reuters quoted a spokesperson from the National Security Council as saying.
