UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, along with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai and Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Presidential Court, congratulated Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his re-election as the President of the Republic of Turkey.
The President wished the re-elected leader all success in leading his country and achieving the aspirations of his people toward further progress and prosperity, while expressing his hopes for continued cooperation in order to strengthen the relations of the two countries.
American President Joe Biden took to Twitter and wrote: “I look forward to continuing to work together as NATO Allies on bilateral issues and shared global challenges.”
Erdogan’s controversial election win amidst challenges
The 69-year-old Erdogan won the recent elections when results were declared on Sunday, with official results giving him 52.1 percent votes, compared to 47.9 percent for his challenger, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who called it “the most unfair election in years” but did not dispute the outcome.
The opposition felt it had a chance of overthrowing Erdogan as the country of 85 million people grapples with inflation, cost of living and a national currency that has been in a free fall. The President has also angered his NATO allies with his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In a victory speech in Ankara, Erdogan said inflation was Turkey’s most urgent issue. He later addressed a rally of his supporters and added that “the only winner today is Turkey”.
The devastating earthquake in the country in February, in which more than 50,000 people died, was also expected to play a deciding role in the elections, with survivors complaining of slow response by the state machinery.
