The Qatari government has said it would help rebuild war-ravaged Gaza after a long-term ceasefire between Hamas and Israel was reached, but has not disclosed how much it is willing to spend.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Qatar said it was “ready to contribute to the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip as soon as possible”.
The gas rich Gulf state, which hosts the exiled leader of Hamas Khaled Meshaal, said the ceasefire reached on Tuesday in Cairo was a tribute to the “resistance and the sacrifices” of the Palestinians during 50 days of conflict with Israel.
It hoped the agreement would be a step towards “alleviating the suffering of the people in Gaza and achieving the legitimate demands of the Palestinians”.
Qatar has been the major contributor to the reconstruction of Gaza after various attacks, as well as development and financial support of Hamas.
The official Qatari committee for rebuilding Gaza recently allocated $10 million and said it would give compensation to home owners whose residences were damaged during the latest conflict, Doha-based Al Jazeera reported.
The reconstruction of Gaza would be discussed at a donors’ conference in Cairo next month, vice-chairman of the political office of Hamas Moosa Abu Marzouq said in a statement issued by Maan, a Palestinian news agency.
Qatari charities also have launched fundraisers for the rebuild, The Peninsula said.
Sheikh Eid bin Mohammad Al Thani Charitable Association is expected to launch a campaign called We are All Gaza today, with the aim to raise QR100 million ($27m).
