More than 60 companies were found violating Qatar’s labour laws in the fourth quarter of 2009, officials have announced.
The Ministry of Labour said in a statement that its inspection department had recorded the irregularities as a result of an ongoing inspection campaign to prevent labour law breaches.
The campaign aims to apply provisions of the Gulf state’s Labour Code to provide “adequate protection for the rights of migrant workers”.
The ministry urged companies operating in the country to apply the provisions of the law, Qatar News Agency reported with giving further details about the type of violations found.
In December, it was reported that Qatar had stepped up its campaign to protect workers’ rights by launching an online monitoring system that employers must sign up to.
The Ministry of Labour said it was to introduce the online system to enable it to detect any violation of labour law by employers, including the delay in disbursement of salaries.
The new monitor will see employers having to enter the details of workers in a specially designed electronic programme.
