The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) said that it followed with great concern the acts of violence and vandalism targeting Muslims in several states in India during the Hindu festival of Ram Navami last week.
Violent clashes and incidents were reported from some of the Indian states, including Bihar and West Bengal, during the procession to celebrate the Hindu festival of Ram Navami last week.
An incident of burning of a religious school and its library, allegedly by a mob of Hindu extremists in Bihar Sharif on March 31 was also reported.
The OIC General Secretariat condemned the provocative acts of violence and vandalism, describing them as a clear sign of growing Islamophobia and systematic targeting of Muslims in India.
It called on the Indian authorities to take firm measures against the instigators and perpetrators of such acts, and to ensure the safety, rights, and dignity of Muslims in India.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), however, reprimanded OIC for the statement.
“We strongly condemn the statement issued by the OIC Secretariat regarding India,” the MEA spokesperson said in a statement.
