SALARY DISPUTE: The UAEs Ministry of Labour has vowed to crack down on any violations of the labour law.

The UAE’s Ministry of Labour has pledged to get tough with companies who violate labour laws after hearing the case of an Asian worker who was told she would have to cut her salary or lose her job.

Humaid bin Daimas, acting director general of the ministry, declined to name the firm involved but said it would assist the woman in finding new employment.

In comments published by news agency WAM, he added that any violation of the labour law “will incite penalties ranging from suspension of licence, fine and referral to the public prosecution”.

His comments came during the open day organised by the ministry where an Asian worker told officials that she was given two options by her employers – to lose her job or to cut her salary from AED2,500 to AED1,500.

“Once asked to accept a decrease in the salary, the employee has the right to move to another oragnisation. The ministry will issue her a temporary work permit to look for another job and will also ensure that she gets her benefits in full from the previous employers,” said bin Daimas.

“The practice of talking workers into accepting a decrease in salaries is considered a violation that is punishable by law,” he added.
