Kuwaiti lawmakers submitted a request today to question Interior minister Sheikh Jaber Al Khalid Al Sabah over the alleged torture to death of a Kuwaiti while in police custody.
Waleed Al Tabtabaie, Shuwaib Al Mowayzeree and Salem Al Nimlan said in their petition that Sheikh Jaber misled the public and abused his power, according to a copy of the request distributed to the press.
Sheikh Jaber submitted his resignation on January 13 and was asked to remain in his post and complete an investigation into the death. A forensic report showed evidence of criminal intent, the state news agency KUNA reported.
Al Qabas newspaper on January 12 carried statements by lawmakers saying the detainee was tortured to death.
Lawmakers in Kuwait, which has allowed more room for political opposition than other hereditary monarchies in the Arabian Gulf, have stepped up their challenge to the government in recent weeks. Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al Mohammed Al Sabah on January 5 narrowly survived a confidence vote in parliament after police cracked down on an opposition rally.
