Kuwait bans 100,000 from leaving country

Gulf state takes action over people in dispute over fines of as little as $350 – reports

Tens of thousands of people in Kuwait are trapped in the country over fines worth less than KD100 ($350), according to local media.

Kuwaiti courts have banned about 100,000 people – 10,000 last month alone – from leaving the country over various disputes, with many related to minor fines, Arabic newspaper Al-Qabas reported, quoting a security official.

The list included 58,000 Kuwaitis and 42,000 expatriates from 12 countries.

A Ministry of Interior staffer said the travel bans were enforced to protect the rights of the creditors.

The trapped residents could have their travel ban lifted once they paid the fine, if they had no other court orders against them.
