US Vice President Kamala Harris’s election campaign reportedly raised $200 million and signed up 170,000 new volunteers in the week since she became the Democratic presidential candidate.

President Joe Biden ended his re-election bid on July 21 and endorsed Harris for the November 5 vote against Republican former President Donald Trump.

Harris has secured support from a majority of delegates to the Democratic National Convention, likely ensuring she will become the party’s nominee for president next month.

In an X post, Harris’ deputy campaign manager, Rob Flaherty, said, “In the week since we got started, Kamala Harris has raised $200 million dollars. 66 percent of that is from new donors. We’ve signed up 170,000 new volunteers,” Reuters reported.

Earlier this month, Trump’s campaign said it raised $331 million in the second quarter, topping the $264 million that Biden’s campaign and its Democratic allies raised in the same period.

Trump’s campaign had $284.9 million in cash on hand at the end of June, while the Democratic campaign had $240 million in cash on hand at the time.

Meanwhile, a Democratic fundraiser said Harris is a symbol of hope and representation for more than 4.4 million Indian-Americans in the US.

He also asserted that her presidential campaign’s “organic, grassroots enthusiasm” is producing results, PTI reported.

“Kamala Harris, with her Indian origin, brings an additional layer of excitement and support from the Indian-American community. As someone whose mother hailed from Chennai, India, Kamala Harris is not just a candidate but a symbol of hope and representation for over 4.4 million Indian Americans,” Ajay Bhutoria, deputy national finance chair, ‘Harris for President, 2024’, said on Sunday.

“From record-breaking fundraising to unprecedented crowds and volunteers pouring into field offices across the battlegrounds, Team Harris is fired up to elect the Vice President and defeat the extremist Trump-Vance ticket,” he said.
