US President-elect Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk will head a newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), alongside entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.

The pair would play a pivotal role in his administration’s efforts to reduce government bureaucracy, eliminate unnecessary regulations, cut wasteful spending, and restructure federal agencies – key elements of his “Save America” agenda, Trump said in a statement.

“Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies – Essential to the ‘Save America’ Movement,” the statement said.

In his statement, Musk said the new agency “will send shockwaves through the system, and anyone involved in government waste, which is a lot of people!”

While Musk was a key figure in Trump’s re-election campaign, Ramaswamy, who initially ran against Trump in the Republican primary, has since endorsed the former president.

The president-elect stated that Musk and Ramaswamy will offer “advice and guidance from outside of government” and work closely with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget to implement large-scale structural reforms.

Their goal is to introduce an entrepreneurial approach to government, one that has never been seen before, he said.

On the campaign trail, Trump had stated that the government efficiency initiative would focus on eliminating “fraud and improper payments” and conducting a “complete financial and performance audit” of the federal government.

He announced that the new panel would collaborate with the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, with their work set to conclude by July 4, 2026  – marking the nation’s 250th anniversary.
