Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and the Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, discussed the Russia-Ukraine conflict and bilateral relations in a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau.

Trudeau lauded the humanitarian support provided by the UAE to the affected civilians in Ukraine. The two leaders discussed the latest developments in the Russia-Ukraine crisis and ways to contain its humanitarian and economic repercussions.

Earlier this week, the UAE sent a plane carrying 30 metric tonnes of medical and relief supplies to Ukraine as part of its continued efforts to provide urgent relief support to impacted civilians in Ukraine.

UAE’s humanitarian aid to Ukraine civilians

The UAE has announced humanitarian assistance worth $5 million in direct response to the international humanitarian appeal to support those who are displaced in Ukraine, as well as the four million refugees who have fled to neighbouring countries, the state-run news agency, Wam, reported.

During the month of March, the UAE provided an airlift of relief aid that included tonnes of food items to the Ukrainian authorities in Poland that could be transported inside the country or to help Ukrainian refugees in Poland.

Since the outbreak of the Ukrainian crisis, the UAE has sent two planes of relief and medical supplies carrying 60 metric tonnes, as well another two planes from the International Humanitarian City in Dubai carrying 124 metric tonnes, including relief supplies and shelter equipment. The latest plane, which departed from the UAE earlier this week, will be the fifth plane sent by the UAE to aid Ukraine civilians.

EU avoids sanctions on Russia crude oil

Meanwhile, oil prices erased early losses but remained above the $100 mark, settling at approximately $102 per barrel after the EU held off sanction on Russian crude.

Russia is the third largest producer of oil in the world, after the US and Saudi Arabia.

The EU will press on with additional penalties against Moscow for the war in Ukraine, including a ban on coal, but crude won’t yet be targeted, Bloomberg reported.

The US, EU, and the G7 nations have considered increased sanctions on Russian financial institutions and state-owned enterprises, as well as new investments in Russia.

Earlier this week, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated the EU is also considering a ban on Russian ships and trucks, preventing them from entering the bloc.

The US, Europe, and allied nations in Asia have together already imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia, including on its central bank, in response to the Ukraine invasion.

In March 2022, Arabian Business reported that the CEO of Abu Dhabi’s soveriegn wealth fund Mubadala called for an end to the Russia-Ukraine crises and said that the fund would “pause investments” in Russia.
