Today we are met with the sad news that UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has passed away, may he rest in peace. As we take time to respect his life and pass on our condolences, it is also time to reflect on the extraordinary legacy of a truly exceptional leader.
Sheikh Khalifa has been a figurehead of transformation and progress, driving forward the vision passed on to him by Sheikh Zayed. He has done this with his continuous support for building a vigilant society rich in its human resources and equipped with the technology and the determination to shape its own future. Not only has he developed the country to meet the demands of a modernised and fast-evolving world – he has done so with dedication, sincerity and love.
As an expat of nearly 20 years, 13 of which have been spent in the UAE while Sheikh Khalifa has been President, I have been warmly embraced by a country I am proud to call home owing to his gracious leadership.
Sheikh Khalifa’s visionary foreign policy has seen the kindred spirit and Arabian hospitality extend through the GCC, Asia, Europe and further afield. The UAE has committed to supporting people internationally in over 70 countries, developing solid partnerships that extend beyond generations for the greater good of diplomacy, economy, and humankind.
This was clearly demonstrated as the country welcomed people from all corners of the world to be a part of the country’s development and ongoing progress. He chose an empowering view to welcome expats, not least part of a view to advance and globalise the nation, but also to build greater strength and tolerance. It is well documented that family played an important role in his life, and he made sure everyone in the country felt a strong sense of belonging to the greater UAE family – one characterised by tolerance and openness.
Through the development of prominent projects and reforms, he has left a remarkable footprint. From Federal Government restructuring, as well as the progression of technology, agriculture, housing, infrastructure, Sheikh Khalifa led the nation with clear purpose. This purpose has supported the development of the economy, incubated incredible leadership among local Emiratis, and created jobs for millions of foreign expats.
Economic development is one thing, but the true hospitality, welcome and warmth that he has commanded has been a revelation and incomparable internationally. As a proud expat and resident of the UAE, I will forever be grateful to the country, but even more so to the authority, compassion, and leadership of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
I extend my sincerest condolences to the leadership and the people of the UAE. His Highness continues to be an inspiration to all people, globally. May his soul rest in peace.
