Abu Dhabi to develop $61m central market

Al Dhafra Municipality plans new market in Ghayathi City

Abu Dhabi’s Department of Municipal Affairs and
Transport (DMAR) on Tuesday awarded a $60.49 million (AED222 million) contract
to a local firm to refurbish and expand the central market at Madinat Zayed, Al
Dhafra region.

The two-level market will cover an area of 53,307
square metres. The ground floor will house a hypermarket, retail stores and
entertainment facilities, while the first floor will include restaurants, play
area, health centres, cinema theatre and a multipurpose hall, according to
state news agency WAM.

Atiq Khamis Al Mazrouei, acting director-general of the
Al Dhafra Municipality, said the municipality will also review plans for
building a $9.19m (AED33.73m) food and vegetable market at Ghayathi City.
