Olympique Lyonnais

Despite the club’s best ever performance in the Champions League and an increase in revenue to $197.7m, Olympique Lyonnais dropped down one spot in the Money League.

The 2009/2010 Ligue 1 runners up saw their Champions League performance generate $39.3m in UEFA central distributions, approximately 20 percent of the club’s total revenue. This was a key driver behind broadcast income increasing to $13.9m.

Commercial revenues fell by $8.3m, taking the total fall since 2007/2008 to $21.6m. Attributing the fall to the wider economic climate, the club said it expected to see an increase in merchandising revenues following the commencement in 2010/2011 of a deal with adidas to be the club’s kit manufacturer for ten years, a deal anticipated to deliver between $108.3m and $135.3m in total over the duration of the contract.

Matchday revenue increased to $33.5m in 2009/2010, a $3.2m increase in the previous year’s figures. Nevertheless, matchday revenues only accounted for 17 percent of the club’s income and average league attendances fell to 35,767, one of the lowest in the Money League.

Continued participation in the Champions League is vital to securing Olympique  Lyonnais’ position in the top twenty for future editions of the Money League. In addition, the decision to build a new stadium is likely to provide a substantial revenue boost for the club.
