Bayern Munich

Driven by a domestic league and cup double and their first Champions League final appearance since 2001, Bayern Munich recorded total revenue of $423.7m in 2009/2010, closing the gap to Manchester United by $14.4m.

The Bavarian club’s revenue exceeded $400m for the first time last season, with growth across all three revenue streams.

Broadcast revenue saw the largest rise, reaching $112.9m, while finishing as runners up in the Champions League earned the club $60.7m from central UEFA distributions, the third highest of all the Money League clubs after Inter Milan and Manchester United.

However, the value of these deals remains significantly less than its European rivals due to the limited development of the German pay TV market, compared to the other ‘big five’ European markets.

Commercial revenue was the club’s real strength, with over half of all total revenue coming through the sector. The $234m generated from commercial activities was the highest of any of the Money League clubs, and remained more than $27m higher than its closest challenger, Real Madrid.

Despite the club’s on pitch success in 2009/2010, it is vital for it to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League if it wants to separate itself from the chasing pack and make up further ground on the top three in the Money League.
