The late Manohar R Chhabria established the first Jumbo Electronics retail outlet in Bur Dubai in 1974 and it has since become the flagship of parent company Jumbo Group. It secured exclusive distribution rights for Sony in 1975 and is now one of the largest distributors of the Japanese brand in the world. Manohar Chhabria’s aggressive acquisitions of brands including Shaw Wallace, Dunlop India and Mather & Platt, earning him the nickname ‘takeover tycoon’. After his death in 2002, his wife, Vidya Chhabria, took over the reins and the UAE-based family is estimated to net $1.5bn in revenues annually.
