This is a milestone year for Dr Azad Moopen. It marks 30 years since he founded Aster DM Healthcare with a single doctor practice in Dubai. The physician has grown the company to a remarkable 317 health facilities, including 18 hospitals, 98 clinics and 201 pharmacies across three brands: Aster, Medcare and Access.

He now employs nearly 20,000 healthcare professionals across the Middle East and India. In the past year, he has paid particular attention to Kerala, his home state in India, and where he is already the largest employer in the healthcare sector. In June, he announced $90m worth of investments in three projects in the state, including a 500-bed super-specialty hospital built on a greenfield in the capital Thiruvananthapuram.

The company has also recently branched out into sports medicine for the, opening two centres in Kerala. Cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar inaugurated the centres, which will cater to both professional and amateur sportspeople as the sports medicine industry in India is estimated to more than double to $554m by 2022, according to Data Bridge Market Research.

Aster DM Healthcare also hopes the centres will support and encourage the emergence of world-class athletes in India.
