A trophy project for its state-backed developer, Nakheel Harbour & Tower was announced
in 2008. The tower was billed as a 1,400m tall icon, set to surpass the city’s
Burj Khalifa, and featuring the world’s first inner-city harbour.
The promotional video for the $38.12bn project included a
glimpse at its star-studded launch party, attended by Hollywood couple Michael
Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones.
On its completion, Nakheel
Harbour & Tower was expected to house up to 55,000 people.
The project was suspended in December 2009, after developer
Nakheel’s funding troubles played a key role in triggering Dubai’s debt crisis.
The Dubai Metro station by the site carries the name of the
tower.
