The recent big news for Ooredoo (formerly known as Qtel) has been the rollout of services in Myanmar, one of the world’s last virtually untapped telecoms markets. The firm, which operates in 15 countries across the Middle East, Africa and Asia, has also been spending heavily on its marketing, signing up Barcelona FC forward Lionel Messi as a brand ambassador, and sponsoring Qatar-owned French Ligue 1 side Paris St-Germain. Ooredoo reported an 11 percent drop in net profit in the second quarter, to $244m.
