Hamdi Qandil has reserved a spot on this year’s power list as an uninhibited political commentator who freely expresses controversial opinions on his TV show “Kalam Rasas” airing on Dubai’s satellite channel.
The media mogul is known to boldly criticize regional governments. He has interviewed the likes of Libyan leader al-Qadhafi about boycotting US goods and covers topics including Israeli aggression.
Hamdi Qandil won the Media Accomplishment Award in London last year for his work on the show. The ceremony marked his achievements in a career that spans over 50 years in the media industry.
Aside from his work on “Kalam Rasas”, he has also hosted a show titled “Press Releases” in Egypt, as well as a weekly political talk show called “Rais Tahrir”. He has also served various positions with the International and Arab Institutes of Media and Journalism.
As a pioneer of politically inclined TV, his talk shows have sparked a number of similar shows to appear on Egyptian television. Television officials now recognize that their audiences are interested in serious programs to complement the light hearted entertainment that is normally characteristic of Egyptian TV shows.
