Unbowed by the recent dismissal of his case against the British establishment, Mohamed Al Fayed is making headlines all over the world. He has made repeated allegations that the deaths of his son Dodi and Diana, Princess of Wales were not accidental, but rather the result of a wide-ranging conspiracy. However, the specific people involved vary in Al Fayed’s numerous accounts, and his recent testimony at the inquest into the death of Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed was condemned in the press as being farcical. It led to members of the British Government’s Intelligence and Security Committee accusing him of turning the Inquest into a “circus”, and calls for the inquiry to be ended prematurely.
Away from the courtroom, there has been talk of Al Fayed taking a back seat at Harrods and leaving the daily running of the group to his 21 year-old son, Omar. In the meantime, despite being 73 years old he still owns and runs the luxury store Harrods in London, which employs 5000 people. The holding company has expanded into luxury real estate, corporate aviation and even banking. In the past year, profits have risen again at the store and his personal fortune has risen to above the billion-dollar mark. These riches have helped him to continue funding his beloved Fulham Football Club, although the team is this season struggling to preserve its Premier League status.
