As managing director of the UAE-based Al Adil Group, Dhananjay Datar has masterminded an extraordinary recent success story. The import-export group caters mainly to the UAE’s South Asian expatriate population of 2.5 million, specializing in foodstuffs, and various branded non-food items. Revenue increased 40 percent in 2009 in comparison to the year before, which has left Datar pursuing an aggressive expansion plan. Al Adil Group currently has fourteen outlets in the UAE, including supermarkets in four emirates, and will look at building its operations in other Gulf countries as well. For this year, Datar is expanding its retail outlets in Al Ain and Abu Dhabi, and will also open new branches in Bahrain and Doha.
