Though Qatar is one of the richest countries in the world, the workers in the service industry are very poorly paid and rarely see the benefit of the (usually 10 percent) service charges in place in restaurants and hotels – so to tip for good service is an act of generosity. Even small amounts make a huge difference.
Tips are not expected but if they happen they tend to improve the service “remarkably” according to one visitor! 10-15 percent in a restaurant is a nice gesture.
QAR10-20 ($2.7 – 5.4) for doormen, porters, service staff at mosques, petrol service station workers and slightly more per day for hotel housekeepers is appreciated.
For taxi drivers, round up fare.
It is most important to be discreet and respectful when you tip.
