Al Matrooshi will become the first Arab astronaut to be sent into space as part of the second batch of the UAE’s Astronaut Programme was announced in mid-April this year.

Nora AlMatrooshi and Mohammed AMulla – who was also named by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai during that announcement – were selected from more than 4,000 applicants and their training will soon begin for international space flights.

The two new astronauts join astronauts Hazzaa AlMansoori and Sultan AlNeyadi to form a team of four under the UAE Astronaut Programme, serving the strategy of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) base.

Only 65 women from around the world have been in space to date, which makes the Emirati AlMatrooshi the 66th.

AlMatrooshi was born in 1993 in Sharjah. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the UAE University in 2015 and has years of experience in the field of engineering.

She is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and currently works as an engineer at the National Petroleum Construction Company.
