The pioneering duo launched Careem as a ride-hailing app in 2012, only to turn it into one of MENA’s most successful stories, operating in over 120 cities across 15 countries including Palestine and Baghdad, where it became the first ride-hailing service in the country. The Dubai-based company was acquired this year by Uber for $3.1bn.
Careem is expanding its platform beyond ride-hailing and into payments, delivery and mass transportation.
Sheikha said: “As we grow and do new things at Careem, it is important for us to keep evolving our leadership structures to best align with opportunities and realities. This evolution had to kick into high gear to realise our new Vision 2022 and the aspiration to become the region’s everyday super app.”
