She became the first Muslim woman to serve as the US Representative for Michigan’s 13th congressional district in 2019, and the first Palestinian-American woman in Congress.
For her swearing-in ceremony, she wore the traditional Palestinian thobe. The politician and lawyer and member of the Democratic Party represented the 6th and 12th districts of the Michigan House of Representatives before her election to Congress.
Tlaib openly supports the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel and is an advocate of the Palestinian right of return.
