Somayya Jabarti is the first woman ever to take control of one of Saudi Arabia’s newspapers. Her appointment was noted as a milestone in a country which is rapidly transforming to allow women to take a more prominent role in the kingdom’s society and economy.
She was previously deputy editor of Arab News, where she worked for nine years. In 2011, she won widespread acclaim for her reportage from Cairo’s Tahir Square during the Arab Spring.
