Now a widely recognised face in showbiz, the 37-year-old Arab American is perhaps best known for his lead role as Elliot Alderson in the hit USA Network TV series Mr Robot, for which he won a Critic’s Choice Award and Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a drama series.
While he has acted in a number of supporting roles in a number of TV series and films, later this year he will play the lead role of Freddie Mercury in the much-anticipated biographical film of the Queen lead singer, Bohemian Rhapsody.
Malek, who was born in Los Angeles and raised in the Coptic Orthodox faith of his late father, a former Cairo tour guide and later door-to-door insurance salesman, is well known for being one of very few Arab actors to have achieved mainstream success in American show business.
His Emmy win was widely covered by news outlets in the Middle East and was the subject of a congratulatory statement by the DC-based Arab American Institute.
Late last year, a video of him speaking Arabic went viral on social media and was shared millions of times throughout the region.
