Dr. Hamed Hashim Al Dhahab has had a busy year at the helm of Al Watanyiah. The transformation of the firm from its old guise as NUEC is further advanced and as a local entity with 22 years’ trading history, coupled with Al Dhahab’s experience in the government and private sectors, Al Watanyiah is in an enviable position of being able to adapt to the nuances of operating in the Sultanate.
This local knowledge has undoubtedly helped it pick up work over the past year. New awards include building phase two of the A’Sharqiyah University in Ibra and dualisation of the Al Rustaq Escarpment Road (Governorate of South Al Batinah). It is also working on the Sohar Roundabout project, which reached 70% completion in May.
Meanwhile, the firm is moving into new sectors, having launched a new company – Al Watanyiah Oil and Gas – in a JV with Polish oil and gas firm, PBG Group.
Al Dhahab has also strongly backed the recent crackdown on corruption in Oman which has claimed the scalps of senior construction industry figures. In March he told CW: “There was huge public discontent and people were not happy [with] the way the business was being done. This move from the government will ensure healthy competition and improve transparency.”
