As one of the longest-established contractors in the region, the joint venture between UK contractor Carillion and Al Futtaim Group, has been busy this past year under Derek Lewis’s stewardship. The JV has completed several projects at Downtown Dubai for developer Emaar, including infrastructure work and residential towers.
Lewis said: “Working around The Burj area has been particularly challenging, involving the logistics of dealing with live services, heavy traffic flows and large numbers of the general public. We are currently completing the enabling works for The Avenue and the Dubai Mall.
“We successfully mobilised for Citywalk Phase 2 and a hotel which we have recently won from Meraas. Both projects are moving ahead with good progress.
“We are currently mobilising for the Hard Rock Hotel in Abu Dhabi and the Dubai World Trade Center in Dubai.”
The New York University Project in Abu Dhabi was handed over to client Mubadala last month, representing the largest project completed by the JV. In the same month it also revealed that it had signed, or been selected as the preferred bidder for, contracts in the UAE and Saudi Arabia that are worth in total £400mn ($675mn). In Dubai, Al Futtaim Carillion signed contracts to build two major luxury hotels that together are worth approximately £300mn ($506mn).
Lewis has worked 32 years overseas and been part of Al Futtaim for 21 years.
