‘Barbiecore’, inspired by the latest global blockbuster movie ‘Barbie’, is fast emerging as the new fashion trend among millennials and middle-aged alike in the UAE and the larger Middle East region of late, eliciting nostalgia while infusing fashion with playfulness and joy, industry insiders said.
Futuristic aesthetics, driven by AI and tech integration and featuring silver and blue tones with pixelated patterns, is also emerging as the new rage among the fashionistas and Gen Z in the region.
“Fashion trends among millennials and middle-aged individuals in the region are taking intriguing directions, reflecting a fusion of nostalgia, technological advancement, and creative exploration,” Tommy Lee, Managing Director of Modern Productions, a UAE-based vogue and lifestyle event platform, told Arabian Business.
“Among them is ‘Barbiecore’, a compelling trend inspired by the iconic Barbie franchise’s resurgence, impacting marketing and culture. This enduring trend resonates with millennials and middle-aged individuals alike,” said Lee, whose venture will soon be bringing some of the premium never-before-seen global brands, alongside emerging local boutiques to the city at the much anticipated fashion week event ‘Mode Dubai’ in December.
Futurism, Cowboy aesthetic of 2023
Other significant trends currently in the vogue include ‘futurism’, driven by AI and tech integration on runways, and the revived ‘cowboy aesthetic’ of 2023, featuring cowboy boots, fringing, suede, and outback motifs.
“The cowboy aesthetic exudes rugged individualism and nostalgia, appealing to a wide range of individuals, including celebrities, stylists, influencers, and creators,” Lee said.
‘Mode Dubai AW23 will be showcasing these trends, offering a glimpse into the industry’s exciting future,” said the fashion industry veteran, whose team is currently travelling the world to curate a very specific edit of brands for the forthcoming Dubai event.
Usisi Sister, Reemami, Scarlett Poppies among UAE’s most preferred international fashion brands
Lee also offered a peep into the current standout fashion brands in the UAE, as also in the larger GCC region.
“Brands like Usisi Sister, Reemami, Scarlett Poppies, By Hala, and Tutti & Co have gained popularity for their distinctive styles,” he pointed out.
‘Scarlett Poppies’ is famed for its exemplary resort wear collections and known for its exceptional quality, while ‘By Hala’ has garnered attention for its unique perspective and niche appeal.
‘Usisi Sister’s directional approach resonates with UAE’s trendsetting consumers seeking cutting-edge styles, Tutti & Co’s successful launch and unique prints have positioned them for further growth, and Reemami’s departure from the norm has attracted a dedicated following, he said.
“These brands reflect the region’s growing and discerning appetite for fresh, innovative fashion choices that deviate from the ordinary. As fashion preferences develop, these brands have the potential to contribute to shaping the evolution of the UAE and the GCC fashion scene,” Lee said.
