An overwhelming majority of UAE residents are planning to rely on online streaming channels and social media for following various games and events at the 2024 Paris Olympics, a survey revealed.
While nearly half of UAE residents – 49 percent to be precise – are planning to watch the forthcoming sports extravaganza on online streaming channels to keep up with the games, closely followed by 48 percent of the residents intending to follow social media updates to keep them abreast with the events, latest data from YouGov survey showed.
Slightly fewer – 46 percent – plan to follow the games on TV, while a quarter intend to watch them at a sports bar or other broadcasting venues, it said.
A fifth will stay updated through coverage in newspapers or news sites (21 percent), while one in ten (11 percent) intend to catch the action live in Paris at an Olympic venue.
YouGov said its survey showed that men are more likely than women to follow the Olympics via online streaming (53 percent men vs 39 percent women), while women are more likely to follow social media updates (46 percent vs 55 percent).
Among the age groups, 35-44 years old adults are most likely to follow social media updates (55 percent), while above 55 adults are most likely to watch the games on TV (73 percent).
Excitement of the event is the topmost reason for UAE residents to watch the Paris Olympics, followed by the urge to support the country’s athletes and the country’s pride.
A third (34 percent) tune in to witness participating athletes’ feats and performances.
Interestingly, the survey said three in ten of viewers (30 percent) watch the games to evade the feeling of missing out on a global event, while almost a quarter do so because their friends and family do so (23 percent).
