Portuguese football icon Cristiano Ronaldo will earn over €200 million ($214 million) to promote Saudi Arabia’s joint 2030 World Cup bid in addition to his club salary, AFP reported on Monday, citing a source close to Ronaldo’s club, Al Nassr.
“Ronaldo will be paid more than 200 million euros ($214 million) for the deal,” the source said, requesting anonymity.
The source added that “he [Ronaldo] will be an ambassador for the Saudi 2030 World Cup bid for another 200 million.”
The €200 million will be an additional amount to his existing $200 million a year contract with the Saudi club. Ronaldo’s contract with Al Nassr includes commercial and sponsorship tie-ins.
Following Qatar’s successful hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Saudi Arabia is reportedly considering a bid to bring the much-loved football tournament back to the Middle East.
Ronaldo, who joined Saudi’s Al Nassr in December following his exit from Manchester United, is currently serving a two-match suspension for smashing a fan’s phone from hand. Ronaldo was also faced with a $60,000 fine.
However, Ronaldo’s first game could be against Lionel Messi’s Paris Saint-Germain on January 19.
