Despite signing a contract worth more than $200m a year delays have sprung up to prevent Cristiano Ronaldo from making his first appearance for the club.

Reports have emerged that a ban from the English FA will prevent the former Man Utd star from playing until he serves a two-game suspension.

The punishment was served after Ronaldo slapped a phone from the hand of a spectator and under FIFA regulations he cannot play for two games, despite changing clubs in the interim.

Despite the probable ban, thousands of fans were expected to turn out  to watch the game with a hope of catching a glimpse of the football and social media icon.
