Cristiano Ronaldo is on the verge of a sensational move to Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr.

The former Man Utd and Portugal star left Manchester United this month following a controversial interview with Piers Morgan. In the interview Ronaldo conformed that he had been offered a contract by a club in Saudi Arabia. It was not known which club had made the offer.

Ronaldo has now agreed a $208m a year contract with Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr, according to Spanish newspaper Marca.

It reports that Ronaldo has agreed a two-and-a-half year deal with the hugely successful Saudi Arabian side.

Ronaldo has yet to comment on the reports as he is concentrating on the World Cup with Portugal. Saudi Arabia’s league is on a hiatus for the duration of the World Cup, but as an out-of-contract player he would be available to play the cub’s next fixture as soon as December 16.

It would instantly make Ronaldo the highest paid footballer in the world and any such contract would likely include off-field promotional work for Saudi Arabia and the club’s developing leagues.

The Portugal star left Man Utd earlier in November, releasing a statement saying: “Following talks with Manchester United, we’ve mutually agreed to end our contract. I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never ever change. It feels like the right time to seek a new challenge. I wish Man Utd all the best”.

Manchester United, in turn, issued a statement saying: “The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford”.

They wished “him and his family well for the future” and added “everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch”.

In the controversial interview with TV presenter Piers Morgan the then Man Utd player confirmed he turned down an offer of €350m ($363m) to play in Saudi Arabia.
