Real Madrid has confirmed that Thibaut Courtois, the Belgian keeper, has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during a training session.
The injury is severe enough to require surgery, casting doubts on his availability for the remainder of the season, the football club said in a statement on Thursday.
The incident occurred on Thursday during a training session, which led to Courtois being stretchered off the field.
The extent of the injury is such that he might be forced to sit out the rest of the season.
Due to this, Real Madrid’s head coach, Carlo Ancelotti, finds himself in a challenging situation.
With the new La Liga season on the horizon and an away match against Athletic Bilbao looming, Ancelotti’s goalkeeping options have been significantly limited.
The injury leaves Andriy Lunin as the only available choice between the posts, however, the 24-year-old Ukraine international struggled to make a convincing impact in his limited appearances last season.
This leaves Los Blancos in a precarious position, grappling with the absence of their primary goalkeeper for a substantial period.
Real Madrid issued an official statement addressing Courtois’ injury, saying: “After the tests carried out on our player Thibaut Courtois, he has been diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The player will undergo surgery in the coming days.”
The club has not provided a precise timeline for Courtois’ recovery.
