Manchester City staff believe the club’s manager, Pep Guardiola, will have left the club before any potential sanctions have been levied by the Premier League over alleged rule breaches, according to media reports in the UK.

Manchester City have been charged by the English Premier League for allegedly breaking financial rules more than 100 times.

Charges brought against Abu Dhabi-owned Manchester City relate to Premier League rules regarding manager and player salaries, club revenue, and guidelines governing profitability and sustainability between 2009 and 2018.

Manchester City investigation

Sports website The Athletic says club insiders expect Guardiola to have moved on from the club before any investigation is finalised.

That is as much down to the expected length of any investigation as a willingness to depart on Guardiola’s part.

However, comments have resurfaced given by the former Barcelona manager last year. Strongly defending Manchester City’s track record in the financial market, Guardiola did say he would walk away from the club should wrongdoing be discovered.

Last May he said: “Why did I defend the club and the people? It’s because I work with them. When they are accused of something I ask them: ‘Tell me about that.’ They explain and I believe them”.

“I said to them: ‘If you lie to me, the day after I am not here. I will be out and I will not be your friend any more. I put my faith in you because I believe you 100% from day one and I defend the club because of that’.”

Manchester City deny any wrongdoing and has welcomed an investigation.

An official statement from the club said: “Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with.

“The Club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent Commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position.

“As such we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all.”

Pep Guardiola signed a two-year contract extension in November, which means he will remain with the club until 2025.

The Catalan manager has led the team to 11 trophies during six seasons in Manchester, including four premier league titles in five years.

Across all competitions, the club has won 278 of the 385 matches he has overseen – a win percentage of 72.2 percent.

On the signing of the new contract Manchester City Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said: “I am delighted that Pep’s journey with Manchester City Football Club will continue. He has already contributed so much to the success and fabric of this organisation, and it’s exciting to think what might be possible given the energy, hunger and ambition that he clearly still has.

“Under his very special leadership our first team has accomplished so much, whilst continuously playing, and constantly evolving, a City style of football that is admired the world over. Like every City fan, I am looking forward to what lies ahead”.

Guardiola said, “I am so pleased to be staying at Manchester City for another two years.”

“I know the next chapter of this club will be amazing for the next decade. It happened over the last ten years, and it will happen in the next ten years because this club is so stable,” he added.
