Manchester City have been charged by the English Premier League for allegedly breaking financial rules more than 100 times.

Charges brought against Manchester City relate to Premier League rules regarding manager and player salaries, club revenue, and guidelines governing profitability and sustainability.

Manchester City did not immediately respond, but are expected to vigorously defend their position.

If found guilty of the financial charges brought against them, Manchester City could be deducted points in the league, face a transfer embargo or even expulsion from the league.

According to the Premier League, Man City broke rules that require clubs to provide authorities with “accurate financial information that gives a true and fair view of the club’s financial position”.

A Premier League statement said: “In accordance with Rule W.82.1, the Premier League confirms that it has today referred a number of alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules by Manchester City Football Club to a Commission under Premier League Rule W.3.4.”

The information the Premier League requires contains details of club revenue, transfer dealings, operating costs and sponsorship. The alleged breaches are said to have occurred between 2009 and 2018.

In the seasons since 2018 City have not helped the Premier League with its investigations, football authorities in England say.

During the period under investigation Man City won three Premier League titles and five domestic trophies. They have yet to win a coveted Champions League trophy.

The club were banned from Uefa competitions for two years by European football’s governing body in 2020 before the ruling was overturned. A $30m fine was reduced to $11m in a court of arbitration for sport.
