Following the Cristiano Ronaldo’s interview with Piers Morgan, the football icon could now be subject to around £1m in fines by Manchester United.
In the interview supposedly initiated by Ronaldo, he publicly slammed his club, Manchester United and manager Erik ten Hag.
“I don’t have respect for him because he doesn’t show respect for me,” said Ronaldo in the interview with Morgan. “If you don’t have respect for me, I’m never gonna have respect for you,” he added.
He goes on to detail the treatment that he claims to receive from members and senior executives and explains that things have changed after Sir Alex Ferguson left the football club.
In a statement issued by the official club page, it stated “Manchester United notes the media coverage regarding an interview by Cristiano Ronaldo.”
“The club will consider its response after the full facts have been established. Our focus remains on preparing for the second half of the season and continuing the momentum, belief and togetherness being built among the players, manager, staff, and fans,” the statement added.
“He feels he has to speak out, he knows it will be incendiary, will rattle some changes, but he also feels he should be doing this. He knows people will criticise him but he also knows what he is saying is true,” Piers Morgan said, media reported.
Ronaldo is set to join Portugal for his fifth World Cup in Qatar, this month. The one-month tournament, which begins on November 20, is on course to top the roughly $5.4bn in revenue that the 2018 World Cup in Russia generated for football’s governing body, a person familiar with the matter said, asking not to be identified discussing confidential information.
