A video of award-winning celebrity chef Ranveer Brar serving a special dal (lentil), the staple Indian dish, at his restaurant in Dubai, has gone viral, triggering varied reactions from netizens.

Brar’s special dal is served in a wooden chest, and instead of tempered spices, powdered 24-carat gold is added to it making this arguably the most expensive dal in the world.

The dish is reportedly priced at AED58 or about INR1,300.

The video of the special dish ‘Dal Kashkan’ served at Dubai Festival City Mall, prompted curious reactions from people with some wondering who could afford such a dish to who would eat it, knowing that gold cannot be absorbed by the body.

Brar, in an interview by The National last year, said he wanted to capture the breadth of Indian cuisine through his restaurant Kashkan — a combination of Kashmir, the northernmost point of the country, and Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of India.

“Since dal can be as basic or as elaborate as its diner’s preferences, he decided to offer a special preparation infused with real 24-carat gold,” he said, adding “And what better place to serve it than Dubai.”

He said the idea was to amalgamate the richness of Indian cuisine with the vibrancy of Dubai.
