Telco du has warned its mobile phone customers that they risk being disconnected if they fail to re-register their SIM cards before October 16, despite a move by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) to extend the deadline.

The UAE’s second largest telecommunications provider said in a statement on Monday evening that it is contacting customers in batches and has allocated specific time lines for them to register their SIM.

“The allocated SIM registration period for the first group of customers expires on Oct 16, 2012,” the operator said.

The statement followed an earlier announcement by the TRA saying it would extend the deadline, as both du and rival operator Etisalat “were unable to provide smooth mechanisms to facilitate, accelerate and stimulate subscribers to update their data”.

The telecommunications watchdog did not confirm a new deadline but said it had instructed operators to speed up the launch of online registration services.

“The TRA encourages all subscribers to come forward and update their information in order to safeguard their privacy [and] to avoid getting into legal or financial accountabilities caused by the misuse of those numbers by others,” it said.

Users can register their SIM cards by taking their passport or national ID to du or Etisalat registration points from July 17, the TRA said in a statement on July 5. Operator Etisalat has 105 registration points across the UAE while du has 46, it added.
