After laying off at least 3,700 employees on Friday, Twitter Inc. reached out to dozens of employees from the firing spree, asking them to return back to work.

As per a report by Bloomberg, some of those who are being asked to return were laid off by mistake, according to two sources.

“Others were let go before management realised that their work and experience may be necessary to build the new features Mr Musk envisions,” the sources said.

The firing was in line with Elon Musk’s ascension as Twitter chief, after he acquired the social media platform for $44 billion, late October.

The billionaire’s strategy was to “eliminate half of Twitter’s workforce, making good on plans to slash costs,” people with knowledge of the matter told Bloomberg earlier.

Many employees also learnt they had lost their job after their access to company-wide systems, such as email and Slack, was suddenly suspended.

However, if employees received an email on their work account, it meant they were retained whereas if they received an email in their personal account, they were fired.

According to Bloomberg, a Twitter representative did not reply to a request for comment. The social networks’ plan to hire back workers was previously reported by Platformer.

“Regarding Twitter’s reduction in force, unfortunately there is no choice when the company is losing over $4M/day,” Musk tweeted on Friday.

As part of his takeover, Musk is venturing into new avenues to make money from the blogging platform, including placing a $20 charge for retaining an account’s verified status.
