A Business Insider report revealed that at least 15 percent of teams are to be labelled as “needs support”, Mark Zuckerberg instructed, in an internal review process. The restructuring suggests a possible layoff of 12,000 people from Facebook’s workforce.
The potential layoffs were revealed last week in a post by a Meta worker, anonymously.
“These 15 percent will likely be put on PIP (performance improvement plan) and be let go,” said the Meta employee.
According to Facebook’s internal review process, an employee labelled as “needs support” is considered to be underperforming and put on a PIP, which most often results in the employee being removed.
According to a source through the report, the requirement to deem people as underperforming is basically a way for the company to be conducting ‘quiet layoffs’.
Earlier, Meta had announced a hiring freeze and subsequent restructuring, this follows similar decisions made by other tech companies amid a time of economic instability. Google, Microsoft and Apple had made similar announcements.
In June, Meta said it planned to cut its hiring of engineers by at least 30 percent this year.
