An 1894 French cannon will be fired to mark the start of Ramadan in Dubai. The cannon will be fired from 15 areas across the emirate during the holy month.

The French cannon was used in two world wars before, and will be used for the first time in over 50 years. The cannons, titled midfa al iftar, are usually located at the Dubai Police Museum.

The cannons are usually fired at sunset to signal the end of the day’s fasting, during Ramadan.

The firing of cannons can also be heard in front of the Burj Khalifa, at Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai Festival City, Damac Hills, Uptown Mirdiff and Hatta Guest House in the weeks to come.

Dubai Police will also feature a British-built cannon at Expo City Dubai during Ramadan, which can reach 170 decibels.

Firing cannons during Ramadan

When firing cannons during Ramadan, four officers should be present at each firing. Two officers must prepare the cannon, as one passes a blank catridge, whereas the other loads it.

Two officers will be guardians of the cannon and give orders. During iftar, an order is given after which the cannon is fired.
