Starting May 15, Dubai’s Emirates will require most passengers departing the emirate to use a mobile boarding pass instead of a printed paper version, the airline announced on Friday.

Passengers checking in at Terminal 3, will receive their boarding passes via SMS or e-mail. Those who check-in online can add their mobile boarding pass into their Apply Wallet or Google Wallet as well.

Passengers can also retrieve their boarding passes via the Emirates mobile app, where they can also find their checked-in baggage receipt. An e-mailed version will also be sent to passengers.

The new move is part of Emirates’ efforts to “significantly reduce paper waste while simultaneously offering a convenient and speedy digitised check in experience for passengers departing Dubai,” the airline said in a statement adding that it “reduces the risk of lost or misplaced boarding passes, giving passengers peace of mind when travelling.”

The pass can be further be used at Dubai Duty Free, for security checks, and for boarding by simply showing the QR code on the mobile pass.

Emirates agents and airport staff will scan the code as passengers move through the airport and onto the plane. The move is aimed at creating a more seamless and contactless travel experience for passengers.

However, some passengers may still require a physical boarding pass to be printed, including those travelling with infants, unaccompanied minors, and those with special assistance needs.

Passengers with onward flights on other airlines, and those travelling to the US, will also require a printed boarding pass.

Passengers who do not have a mobile device, or who are unable to access the information on their device, can request a printed boarding pass from Emirates agents at check-in counters, the airline added.

Travelling from Dubai International Airport (DXB) via Emirates

Registered passengers can now use the biometric machines or smart gates at Dubai International Airport (DXB) to go through various airport stations, creating a more streamlined experience.

UAE residents can register to use the Smart Gates at Emirates Terminal 3 and speed through immigration every time they return to Dubai.

UAE citizens and residents can use their passport, boarding pass, or a valid UAE ID, while GCC nationals or visitors eligible for a visa on arrival can pass through the Smart Gates with a biometric passport.

Emirates is one of the first airlines in the world to offer a mobile boarding pass feature for all stages of the travel journey.

This move is part of the airline’s ongoing efforts to enhance its passengers’ travel experience, while also ensuring safety and convenience during the ongoing pandemic.
