Dubai International Airport (DXB) has launched a new biometric system, which will allow passengers to travel without a passport or boarding pass from the emirate, according to a report by Gulf News.
According to the report, the move is part of Dubai’s efforts to develop smart services for seamless travel for all, aligned with the leadership’s directives to combine advanced technology in government services, thus enhancing quality of life.
Passengers will no longer be required to present their passports or identity cards when travelling, as they will be cleared by a biometric system, the report said, citing Major General Talal Ahmed Al Shanqiti, Assistant General Director of Airport Passport Affairs Sector.
The new biometric system, uses “a mix of facial and iris recognition,” at the airport, allowing passengers to clear for departure without using their passport or ID, eliminating the need for human intervention.
This system applies to all expats, Emiratis and visitors whose data has been registered with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) since 2019.
Biometric information of passengers have been stored on GDRFA’s system for future travels.
“Passengers can experience the most exciting and virtual biometric passenger journey in the world by using artificial intelligence,” Major General Al Shanqiti told Gulf News, adding: “we continue to improve our services with the latest technology and innovation and aim to provide a customer journey that is seamless and fast. We aim to make all counters smart,” he added.
Passengers travelling to a country that requires a stamp can approach the control officer for the same, Major General Al Shanqiti further explained.
